Broadview Farm is a multigenerational family owned and operated farm in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia where we produce grass fed and finished beef, acorn grove pork and pastured poultry for our family, friends and community. This website serves as both a store and a source for education and communication about the food we eat and the way it impacts us and our community.

We've produced Broadview beef for 80 years and still do it the way our Great Grandfather Tex Tilson did, fed and finished on grass pastures. Acorn fed pigs and pastured poultry are new ventures for us this year and we are excited to bring more of the bounty of the land to our community through delicious, healthy and sustainably produced pork, chicken and eggs.

The Family and How We Started Doing This

Most of the primaries but a long time ago.Broadview Ranch has been a working farm since it came into the family in the 1930s. It has nourished our family into a large and vibrant group. Over the years our common interest in the land has held us together and given us the opportunity to grow and enjoy each other. While our interest in the land has never faltered, the effort that we invested into farming it slowly waned over the years to a low point of 50 head of cattle in the early 2000s.

In hindsight, we grew away from farming as the industrial food system evolved away from our values. We found ourselves in the ridiculous position that the industrial food system creates where we would raise high quality grass fed beef, take it to the stock market where it was likely shipped out west to a feed lot, and then pick up a generic steak from the grocery store on the way home. We were just what the system wanted us to be. We want out.

Many people take a look at their modern food chain and say "This doesn't make any sense", but few people have a chance to do anything about it. As we awakened to our situation, we realized that we had the opportunity and perhaps the obligation to do something about it. Our primary goal is to provide clean food to our family while improving our environment (the farm). Even though we have a large family, we still can not produce food economically for them. To compete with the industrial food system we need a bigger family to take advantage of economies of scale. Luckily there are plenty of people that are searching for the same thing our family wants - good, clean food. So we would like you to join our farm family and take an active part in your food chain. We'll see you on the farm.

The People

There are many people involved with the farm.  Friends, neighbors and even spouses have been known to help out.  Here at the primary people that are involved on a daily basis.

Alan Tilson

Alan currently manages the day to day running of the production on the farm.  It is his animal husbandry skills that raise healthy happy animals.  Alan lives in the old stone house on the farm, just like his grandparents did. He is the brother of Carol, the uncle of Lee and Laura

Carol Atwood

Carol manages the equine facilities on the farm.  She offers another pair of hands and eyes to help with the management of the animals.  When you visit the farm, she will likely be down at the barn conducting a horse event.  Carol is the sister of Alan and the mother of Lee and Laura.

Lee Atwood

Lee grew up on the farm and has always looked for ways to share his love of the land with friends and neighbors.  He is currently responsible for the marketing and operational planning of the company.  If you have a problem make sure he knows about it. He currently lives in Richmond.  His house is the drop of point for the Richmond buying club.  Lee is the son of Carol, the brother of Laura, the nephew of Alan and  the cousin of Bryn and Josh.

Josh Grizzle

Josh has always gone out of his way to spend time on the farm and be a part of its future.  He currently serves as treasurer of Broadview Farm and is responsible for the financial aspects of the company.  He currently lives in New York City and will be the contact for beef sales there.  Josh is the cousin of Lee and Laura.

Bryn Beck

Bryn has always been interested in sustainable practices, working outside and an honest days labor.  He has found them all working as a farm manager at Broadview Ranch.  Bryn is the cousin of Lee and Laura.

Laura Atwood

Laura grew up on the farm and produces much of the web design and marketing materials for us.  She is a creative and focused designer and a critical link in our success.  If you need marketing assistance, contact her at designinkstudio.com
