News from the Farm
All things have been moving along nicely on the farm. Here are the highlights in a couple of different areas.
Pond Party a Success

We had a Pond Party on Saturday, June 27th. About 60 friends, neighbors, and family members attended. People came from Lexington, Richmond, DC, Charlottesville, North Carolina and from right across the road. The evening fun included good food, good conversation, and a good opportunity to spend time with each other. Many folks expressed curiosity about the pigs so we took about 4 pickup trucks worth of people to see them and feed them our left over watermelon rinds. The weather couldn't have been better and we'll definitely do it again. We'll send out an email and hopefully you and your family can come.
What did the Bear say to the Little Pigs?
Hopefully, the bears and the coyotes won't be conversing with our little pigs. Last Saturday (June 13th) the pigs were deemed large enough to avoid predatation (about 80-90lbs). We moved them out of the deep bedding barn and into the pig glens. These are paddocks were the pigs can eat grass, root for tubers, and generally be pigs. They love their new accommodations and so far so good with the predators. They will be rotated through these paddocks so that their impact is beneficial rather than detrimental. The rotation will last for the next 4 months at which time they will be moved to the forest to finish on the newly fallen acorn crop.
The Water System

As many of you know we have been working very hard since the winter to develop a system to get water to our cows all over the farm. This allows us to use smaller paddocks, faster rotations and really improve the quality of our fields. The water system is functional with all of the pipe in the ground but we are still working on several projects to complete it. The pump house is under construction and will be finished in the next couple of weeks if all goes well. This will allow us to supplement our current spring source with our well. We have completed the construction of a high altitude pond to gravity flow into our system. We will connect it after the pump house is completed.
The Second Sale is Open!!
The first sale was a success and we are ready to open up the second sale. We learned a lot from the first sale and hope to refine our techniques on the second sale. The major change is that we are going to leave the sale open until closer to the delivery date. See below for the specifics.
- You will have until midnight on Tuesday, July 14th to place your orders on this website. Orders will be processed on a First-Come First-Serve basis and we will only butcher 2 animals this time around.
- The meat will be dry aged for 2+ weeks.
- The butcher will process and flash freeze the cuts.
- Friday July 17th, we will pick up the meat and compile the orders.
- Saturday, July 18th your order will be waiting for you at the pickup location that you select. For this sale we will be servicing Lexington, Charlottesvile, Richmond and hopefully Roanoke. Please read more about the why and were on the Pickup Locations page.
We are having three promotions for this sale. We want to encourage people to buy in bulk. It saves on our end and we believe that you will eat more of our healthy products if you have them around. For that reason we are offering promotions to encourage purchasing in bulk. They are:
- - 5% off on orders over $100
- - 10% off on orders over $200
- - 10% off on Ground beef orders over 20lbs
They can be combined and will be automatically applied when you check out. We will continually look to ways to reward our best customers. Let us know if you have any ideas.
Help us Spread the Word
Many of our core group of customers bought big orders the first time around and probably won't be ordering on this sale. You can still help us out by telling friends and family about us. If we can grow our customer base use more of the farm's capacity we will be able to better serve you, offer more and better products and improve our land and the environment faster. Please spread the word.
Please contact us if you have any questions about our ordering process.
