Parelli Play Days

Friday, June 27th and Saturday, June 28th, 2008

What a wonderful time we had at our Parelli Play Days and Trail Rides.

Friday afternoon was filled with arrivals, setting up camps, playing on line, and trial rides. This was followed by a relaxing pot luck dinner in the barn, watching a video from the Success Series and lots of great discussion.

Saturday started off bright and early as this was day the Tilson family selected to have their once a year calf working. By 6:30 a.m. all the cows and calves were rounded up. As the morning progressed the calves were separated from the cows so they could be run through the chute for their vaccinations etc. Lots of family members from all over showed up to help and the job was finished before the heat of the day.

Saturday afternoon was filled with trail rides. Some rode the 'white' trail, others rode to Alan's cabin, Rebecca & Mike split off to check a creek crossing we were concerned about, Bonnie, Tenley's new horse, had her first trail ride, and still others really did find treasure at the end of the Treasure Hunt Trail Ride.

Sunday saw more trail rides,Treasure Hunters and schooling over the cross country and stadium jumps.

Pre-event Write Up

In response to suggestions from our Play Day and Mock Tournament in April we are expanding our Play Day in June.

Because of travel times for some participants, the play day will span two days. We will have activities on Friday afternoon as well as Saturday. Come for one day or both days. We hope this will make for a more relaxing fun time with your horse.

Primitive camping (i.e. parking in the field) is available at no charge - port-a-john and water spigot available at barn. Other lodging is available in Lexington.

This time instead of a Mock Tournament we will hold some structured play times as well as free play and group trail rides.

This should be an excellent learning experience whether your Parelli journey is just starting or you are well on your way.

Schedule

Friday, June 27th

  • Arrival - You are welcome to arrive at any time. Structured activities will start at 3 p.m.
  • 3:00 - 4:30 Structured Play Time - unmounted
We will choose obstacles and spend time together exploring different ways to do all 7 games with each obstacle. Let's try to give each other new ideas about the usual obstacles we all have (i.e. gates, poles etc.) and then try some more exotic obstacles (i.e. water jump, bank jump).
  • 7:00 Potluck Dinner Together
Everyone bring something to contribute to a potluck dinner. Broadview Ranch will set everything up and provide plates, cutlery, napkins etc.
  • 8:00 Video Time
We will choose a Parelli video to watch together and discuss. Any requests?

Saturday, June28th

  • 10:00 - 11:30 Structured Play Time - mounted
We can talk at dinner Friday and get a sense of what we would like to do mounted. Maybe even break into smaller groups to work on specific tasks of interest.
  • 12:00 - 1:00 Lunch Break
Bring your own or if you rather we can make a take out run to Applebee's.
  • 1:45 - 2:00 Gather and Warm-up
  • 2:00 - 3:00 Trail Ride
This will be a walking trail ride with a supportive Parelli group. If anyone has trouble or needs help we will wait. If you don't feel comfortable riding, feel free to join leading your horse. If there is a group that would like to go further and faster, they can split off and do that.

Ideas of other play day activities:

We have attempted to offer activities to challenge you but not overwhelm you. We have also tried to leave plenty of time for free play. Pick and choose the activities that interest you.

  • trail rides on the marked trails
  • trail ride focusing on a specific task - down hill, water crossings, etc.
  • free-jump
  • round pen
  • school on the cross country course
  • school in the dressage ring
  • gather a small group working on a specific problem
  • daybreak trail ride to the overlook on the mountain
  • film a task for assessment
  • stretch your imagination
  • introduce your horse to cows
